White-Background Product Renders: Choosing Contact Shadows

Choose product-render contact shadows that ground the pack and work with the intended white-background layout.

A white-background product render can include a contact shadow, a separate shadow layer or no ground shadow. Choose based on the final placement. An image intended for a catalogue tile has different compositing needs from a floating product cutout in a campaign layout.

Use the shadow to explain contact

A subtle contact shadow can show where the product meets the surface. A long dramatic shadow may create unwanted empty space or make a group inconsistent. For a hypothetical skincare catalogue, agree one light direction and shadow treatment across the range before rendering every item.

Check the actual page background

An apparently white export can show a visible rectangle against a slightly different page background. Test the file in the intended layout, including any transparency. Do not approve only in an image viewer with its own background colour.

Specify what is editable

If designers need to reposition the product, ask whether a separate shadow or layered file is required. Agree formats and compositing expectations early.

Studio perspective

The studio recommendation is a placement test with the real design team rather than assuming “white background” describes the entire handoff.

Practical review checklist

  • Grounded or cutout use
  • Consistent light direction
  • Real background test
  • Shadow delivery format

Frequently asked questions

Is no shadow always cleaner?

Not necessarily; the product may appear to float.

Can a shadow be changed after rendering?

It depends on the supplied layers and scene; agree editability in advance.

Should all catalogue shadows match?

A coherent treatment helps, while respecting different product shapes.
