Comparing Packaging Artwork Versions: A Sign-Off Checklist

Compare packaging artwork revisions systematically so requested edits and accidental changes are both caught before sign-off.

Packaging artwork comparison should answer two questions: were the requested changes made correctly, and did anything else change unintentionally? Start with the approved previous version, the revised file and a written list of changes. Comparing two filenames without that context is not a reliable review.

Separate content from appearance

Check wording, quantities, identifiers and product names against the approved source. Then review line breaks, spacing and hierarchy. For a hypothetical label address correction, the text may be right while a longer line pushes another item into a poor position. Review both effects.

Use overlays carefully

A visual overlay or comparison tool can highlight differences, but changed rendering, font handling or export settings may create noise. Do not approve solely because the highlighted areas look small. Inspect the final PDF’s production properties and ask the printer to check the aspects it owns.

Record the exact approved release

Keep the reviewed PDF, source-copy version and approval record together. If another edit follows, issue a new version.

The studio recommendation is a short change log that a second person can follow without reconstructing an email conversation.

Practical review checklist

  • Baseline and revised files
  • Written change list
  • Text and layout review
  • Exact release approval

Frequently asked questions

Is visual comparison enough?

No. Check the underlying copy and relevant production properties too.

Can unchanged areas be ignored?

Review for unintended movement or substitutions as well as planned edits.

Should a revised file keep the same name?

Use clear versioning so approval identifies one exact file.
