A drink can designed for a sleeve and a can designed for direct printing may require different templates, colour treatments and production checks. Confirm the supplier and decoration method early. A digital mockup alone does not establish whether the artwork is manufacturable.
Ask for the method-specific template
Obtain the exact can format, printable area and supplier artwork guidance. For a sleeve, ask how distortion and seam areas are handled. For direct print, ask about separations, reproduction limits and the underlying can finish. Do not transfer settings from another supplier because the can capacity matches.
Test the design where the process is least forgiving
Fine details, small reversed text and precise wrap alignments deserve specific review. Show the printer the intended appearance and request feedback before the entire range is adapted. A hypothetical three-flavour range should test its most demanding colour treatment, not only the simplest can.
Compare the whole project scope
Ask suppliers about setup, quantities, lead times and proofing for the actual job. This guide does not claim one route is universally cheaper or more sustainable.
Studio perspective
The studio recommendation is to approve a realistic production route before treating a visual concept as final.
Practical review checklist
- Decoration method confirmed
- Exact can/template reference
- Critical details reviewed
- Supplier proof route agreed

Frequently asked questions
Can one artwork file serve both routes?
Do not assume so; rebuild or adapt it to the chosen supplier specification.
Does a can render prove the colour will print?
No. It is a visual interpretation, not a print proof.
When should the printer join the process?
Before final artwork, especially where the design relies on fine detail or unusual finishes.
